Kochi | Greater Cochin Development Corporation Chairman N Venugopal has informed that as a mark of respect to the Former President A P J Abdul Kalam, the GCDA was planning to christen the walkway on the Marine Drive here as Dr Abdul Kalam Marg.
He also said the trees planted by the late president at the Marine Drive would be maintained by the GCDA and a guard constructed around the trees to protect them.
The proposal was to protect the trees planted by the former president about nine years ago, he said adding the trees were planted on either sides of the walk way.
For the smooth landing of the helicopter carrying the late president on December 19, 2006, the authorities had chopped off the branches of the trees near the helipad because of security reason.
However, instead of chopping of branches, the felling of trees had invited the ire of the environmentalists then.
On hearing the news, Dr Kalam had directed the then District Collector A P M Muhammad Haneesh to plant saplings in place of those trees felled down.
The District Collector then immediately had orderd to plant 30 trees instead of three felled trees.
