Kozhikode | The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala today came down heavily on Communist Party of India (Marxist) for opposing capital punishment awarded to Mumbai serial bomb blast accused Yakub Memon stating such a stand would result into serious consequences.
Talking to newspersons here, BJP state unit President V Muraleedharan said, CPI (M) always took a stand that was ”borrowed” from the Indian Union Muslim League on such issues. Such response from the CPI (M) would create far reaching consequences, he cautioned.
Death sentence to Memon was awarded after following all the legal procedures existed in the judicial system of the country and flaying the decision was tantamount to backing the Indian Union Muslim League, who always opposed the law which was not in their choice.
During the partition of the country, too, the Communist Party had backed the Muslim League, he recalled.
The CPI (M) should have made efforts to abolish capital punishment in the country when it extended outside support to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government during its first term, if that party was so serious about death sentence, he said.
On Congress MP Sashi Tharoor’s statement yesterday opposing the death penalty, he said it was a challenge to the Indian judiciary.
