New Delhi | Presenting an emotional defence in Parliament over her alleged involvement in the Lalit Modi controversy, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today said she had only helped the cancer-stricken wife of Modi.
Making a statement in the Lok Sabha on the controversy, Ms  Swaraj said  she did not recommend to the British government to give travel documents to the former IPL boss.
The Minister said she had not helped Lalit Modi, but his cancer-stricken wife. We helped a woman, who is a citizen of India, who is not involved in the crimes committed. If helping a woman cancer patient is a crime, then I admit having committed this crime and am ready to face any punishment from this House for it,” Ms Swaraj said in an highly emotive speech.
She questioned if Congress President Sonia Gandhi would have acted differently, if faced with such a situation.
”Main poochhna chaahti hoon ki agar meri jagah Sonia ji hoti to kya karti? Marne ke liye chhod deti? (I want to know what Soniaji would have done, if she was in my place? Would she have let the woman die?),” she asked.
”My communication to the British authorities neither tantamounts to recommendation, nor request. Moreover, British authorities in response to a query by a leading newspaper had also held that they had issued Mr Modi travelling documents as per the prevalent rules,” Ms Swaraj said.
Ms Swaraj said that she had been waiting for a long time to speak about all the allegations levelled against her, but was unable to do so because of the ruckus by the Opposition.
For past almost two months, a constant propaganda has been raked up against me over the issue and I was waiting for the session of Parliament, where I could respond to each and every question and allegation being raised against me.
”Every day I came to Parliament, prepared for a debate and my submission, but the prevailing situation during the session denied me the opportunity,” she said.
She said that she was ready to reply to any discussion on the issue in the House.
”Now since the session is heading for a conclusion, I want to request to you to fix up a discussion in the House on a convenient point of time next week so that I can put forth my point and respond to each and every query.
”I am sure that I will come clear at the end and get free from all the ongoing controversies and propaganda as I have committed no wrong. I have not abetted in fleeing of Modi, nor did I stop or obstruct any probe against him, she added.
