Kochi | Pointing out the price hike was one of the serious issues faced by the society, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy today said the government was taking up the challenge through various government agencies, including Supplyo, to check the price hike.
Inaugurating state-level ‘Onam-Metro People’s Bazaar’ and distribution of Onam kits to BPL families here, he said sensing possible price hike of essential commodities and exploitation of people during the Onam festival, the government had already taken effective measures to counter it.
Not only during festival seasons but even during normal times, government agencies like Supplyco, Hortcorop and Consumerfed were giving all support to check the price hike, he said adding the government was fully satisfied with the functioning of these agencies.
Claiming that the government had succeeded in checking the price hike of essential commodities, including rice through effective market intervention, Kerala Food and Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob said there was no uncontrolled price hike.
Later the Government sanctioned a sum of Rs 102 crore to various agencies for the effective market intervention to contain the prices of essential commodities during the Onam festival season.
In a release in the State Capital, Finance Minister K M Mani said the government had already handed over the budget allocation of Rs 65 crore to the Supplyco for the market intervention.
While Consumerfed would get Rs 25 crore, Horticorp and Kerafed would get Rs five crore each. The Minister said five kg of rice would be given to all school children during the Onam festival.
