Kannur | As many as 21 veteran artists, under various categories of Circus field of Kannur district was honoured jointly by the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi (KSNA), State Sports Department and Thalassery Municipality at a function organised at Thalassery town bank auditorium as part of the 160th birth anniversary of legendary circus artiste and instructor Keeleri Kunhikannan.
The organising committee have honoured the artists, including circus legend Gemini Sankaran and 103-year- old T Lakshmi by giving a cash prize of Rs 10,000, trophy and memento. This is the first time that State government has given recognising the circus artist.
Ten each fellowships of Rs 10,000 awarded by KSNA and Sports department. The KSNA authorities also said they would provide medical insurance facility of Rs one lakh to all the registered artists and another Rs 1000 as emergency medical aids from today. The Sports department was providing Rs 1200 as pension to circus artists.
Thalassery Municipal Chairperson Amina Maliyakkal renamed the Chirakkara- KTP Mukku Road at Thalassery as Keeeleri Kunhikannan Road and a statue of him would be installed at Thalassery later.
