Kochi | A prompt action by the duty naval patrol boat in the Ernakulam channel resulted in prevention of infringement of the security cauldron being put in place around the naval area due to heightened security state.
On the eve of Independence Day an unlit country boat (vallam) was detected on the newly commissioned Harbour Defence System, approaching Naval Area. Due to heightened security state which the navy has been following for coastal security which is also known to local authorities, the duty patrol boat (FIC) was directed to investigate, a Defence release said here today.
The unlit fishing boat (vallam) was sighted but the crew did not stop on being asked to produce valid documents by the FIC and continued rowing towards the naval area, it said adding that seeing the FIC closing on to the vallam, one of the crew jumped into the water and in the commotion the vallam toppled.
However, both the crew were subsequently rescued by the naval personnel and handed over to the Police. The ‘vallam’ was detained by the Naval police and has been released after due investigation, it said.
The Indian Navy had recently commissioned the state of the art integrated underwater harbour defence and surveillance system (IUHDSS) to track and warn surface and underwater threats, it added.
