Puducherry | The Puducherry unit of  Communist Party of India today urged the administration to impose total prohibition in the union territory.
In a letter to Chief Minister N Rangasamy, state CPI Secretary R Viswanathan said  as it was a known fact that prohibition could not be imposed all on a sudden, steps should be taken to impose prohibition in a phased manner.
He said drinking habit was there in Puducherry right from the French period. But then it was not so open as presently and added that now Puducherry had become a centre for production and sale of liquor.
He said there are 6 liquor manufacturing units, 432 IMFL whole sale and retail outlets, one government distillery,128 arrack shops and 101 toddy shops in Puducherry and the government should have a second thought whether this much liquor selling units are needed in a 492 sq. km area.
He said it was stated that the government is earning a revenue of Rs.461.97 crores through liquor sale adding the government should think alternate ways to generate revenue. Pointing out the recent steps taken by the Kerala government to curb liquor sale and consumption there,Mr.Viswanathan said that the Puducherry administration should also follow the suit and reduce the working hours of liquor shops.
He said presently the youths are falling prey to drinking habits in their young age and losing their lives due to Jaundice,Liver cirrhosis etc.The statastics for the past ten years clearly shows that the number of accident deaths, and increase of crimes were also there due to the drinking habit.
The Puducherry administration through the women and child development  department is providing financial assistance to widows. The average age of the widows are between 20 and 35. The number of young widows have increased considerably and every one will say the reason for the death of their husband as liquor.
Mr.Viswanathan pointed out that while the government consider that it is earning revenue through liquor sale, the fact remains that it is losing revenue. Most of the toddy shops are selling artificial toddy made out of chemicals causing harm to the health of those consuming it.
Hence, the government in a bid to impose prohibition in a phased manner should propogate about the ill-effect of consuming liquor through the social welfare department,it should bring down the working hours of liquor shops and shold reduce the number of liquor shops here.
