Kottayam | A mentally-challenged persons allegedly made three attemps to sabotage trains between Kottayam and the nearby Chingavanom stations last night, putting the Railway authorities in high alert.
The person, identified as Deepu K Thankappan, was abscoding after the incident, police said.
In the first incident last night, he drove a bike on the railway track and left it in front of the Malabar Express. The train, which hit the bike, managed to stop a few meters away.
Another attempt was made to sabotage the Thiruvananthapuram-bound Amruta Express. Though Iron roads and old electronic equipment were kept on the track, the train ran over them.
In another incident, an attempt was made to disrupt the power lives above the track near Channanikkadu.
A vehicle of the railway official who went to inspect the site was also found damaged.
Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said he sought a report from the local police in this regard.
Railway authorities have inspected the entire stretch to ensure the safety of the passengers.
However, Railway officials ruled out the possibility of involvement of any extremist group in the incident.
