Congratulatory messages are still flowing for Sudev Nair, who won the Kerala State Film Award for the best actor. Not many had noticed Sudev Nair, who made his debut in Malayalam with M.B. Padmakumar’s My Life Partner. Mumbai-based Sudev, who hails from Aluva, has graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).
Many directors and script writers are approaching him with new opportunities. Sudev hopes that the best actor award in his debut film in Malayalam could help him in his quest for more meaningful roles.
His desire has always been working in Malayalam. So he came to Kerala three times to meet directors in search of chances. Sajeev, teacher in Pune Film Institute introduced him to a few directors. At last he met Padmakumar, director of My Life Partner.
The shooting of this film was in Tiruvalla, Kerala. Within 20 days the shooting was over. It was a low budget film and participants had complete freedom to share everything with the director. The sincere effort from the part of everybody contributed to complete the film in days. But the bitter fact was the film was not allowed to have a proper release. If the viewers had seen it and discarded it, I wouldn’t have been that affected. Instead, it didn’t get a proper chance to be screened for the audience. Now it is to be released on the ground of award, says Sudev.
My Life Partner is a Romantic-Drama movie, which tells the relationship between two men. This movie narrates the story of two friends-turned-lovers. Both of them born and brought up in different cultural backgrounds. For them the sacred bond of marriage between a man and woman is just an ironic joke. Later they both live together.
Kerala people can never digest this homosexual relationship. But the case is different in Mumbai and other cities. Me also has such types of friends, Sudev has no hesitation to say it frankly. No need so far to keep away from them, they also have the right to live as they wish, that has to be accepted.
During my engineering days I realized that I was not cut out for such a career. I had got a campus placement, but I decided to apply to FTII. I narrowly missed it during my first attempt, but I got through in the second.
I would say, before FTII, I was just an engineer. My entire training and all my experience have only come through my stint there. The philosophy of FTII is to select students who are capable of learning rather than those who already are proven actors. It was a great boon for people like me., Sudev opens up himself.
As a great fan of Mohanlal, he wishes to do comedy roles like Dasan and Vijayan. Sudev was part of the Bollywood film Gulaab Gang and has a role in the forthcoming Malayalam film, Anarkali. Pridwiraj in the main role and shooting has completed and expect to release in September. Sudev has got a good role in Anarkali. Lakshadweep is the main shooting location. Sudev is also interested in writing and directing. Now he is in a creative work named ‘Not Fit’, which is a web series written and directed by him.
