Thiruvananthapuram | The renowned spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi will donate Rs 100 crore to the Prime Minister’s ‘Namami Gange’ project.
Affectionately revered as Amma (Mother), Amritanandamayi will hand over a draft for Rs 100 crore to the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley at a function in her Ashram in Kollam on September 11, a release said here today.
The donation will be explicitly used for constructing toilets, especially for poor, downtrodden and the toiling masses in villages surrounding Ganges river, as part of the Clean Ganga initiative.
The Prime Minister and Amma initially discussed the possibility of the involvement of Math in the project during Amma’s visit to New Delhi on March 28 this year. Mr Narendra Modi then expressed his gratitude to Amma for her inclination to ensure the asssistance of Math for environmental initiatives, which was in tune with his ‘Swacch Bharat’ programme.
The Math launched its Amala Bharatam Campaign (ABC) in 2010, a programme for improvement of public health and restoring India’s physical beauty.
Through ABC, lakhs of volunteers are regularly cleaning public areas and spreading awareness in schools about cleanliness and disposal of waste items. This has been included in annual cleaning of Sabarimala pilgrimage areas and pampa river, the release added.
