Kochi | Feeling the heat of protests over its decision to stop issuing unreserved sleeper class tickets to commuters travelling daytime, the southern railway decided to keep the plan in abeyance. Earlier on a directive from the higher-ups the Palakkad division had stopped issuing unreserved sleeper class tickets from Saturday evening while Thiruvananthapuram division sought more time for implementation and asked for some clarifications.
Heavy protests from commuters poured in yesterday from all areas, forcing the state government to intervene in the matter and asking railways to reconsider the decision. While putting their weight against the unilateral and authoritarian decision, people cited the ground scenario like the lack of adequate number of local trains in the state and insufficient number of general compartments in long route trains.
Expressing strong resentment over denial of sleeper tickets for passengers in Malabar region the Malabar Chamber of Commerce and Malabar Train Action Committee had urged Railway to roll back the decision immediately. The decision had hit hard senior citizens and other passengers who travel short distance in reservation coaches on sleeper tickets.
