Doctor is a word that evokes respect in anyone. It is the noblest profession in all the professions available throughout the world. Doctors are said to be God’s emissaries to the ailing. As World Heart Day observed on 29 September every year it is worth to remember the cardiologists for their heartfelt services.
Here Dr. T K Jayakumar comes in front of us with a whole hearted smile. That smile depicts success of a heart transplantation achieved by a Government hospital in Kerala for the first time.
It was a great news that Cardiac Surgeon and head of the department of Cardiothoracic and vascular surgery department, Medical college, Kottayam Dr. T K Jayakumar created history by achieving first ever successful heart transplant in govt-run hospitals. Significantly, the surgery cost only Rs 1.25 lakh while a similar surgery in a private hospital would have cost anywhere between Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh.
Jayakumar successfully transplanted the heart of a brain dead patient in the 50-year-old Podimon hailing from Meenkuzhi in Pathanamthitta District. Podimon has been under the treatment of Jayakumar for three months after he was first attended for a cardiac arrest. He was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy with mitral regurgitation and the doctors had recommended a heart transplant.
Jayakumar successfully retrieved the heart of a brain dead patient at Lourdes Hospital, Kochi, and transplanted in the 50-year-old Podimon. The Lourdes hospital officials informed the MCH Cardiothoracic department about the availability of the heart. Soon the relatives of Podimon were informed and were asked to come to the hospital with the patient. The medical team from Medical College Hospital came to Lourdes hospital and harvested the heart. Their return journey to the heart was in an ambulance.
Only 3 hours took to transplant the heart into Podimon’s body. Dr. Jayakumar attributed the success to his entire team. “The entire mission was comfortable due to the good team work. There was no confusion at any point of time,” he said. There were around 40 members of the team including surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, theatre staff, perfusionists and technicians.
Research suggests that coronary heart disease (CHD) begins with damage to the lining and inner layers of the coronary (heart) arteries. Several factors contribute to this damage. They include smoking, cholesterol, diabetes, blood vessel inflammation. It is advisable to conduct heart disease awareness class for the common people.
“The best treatment for heart related diseases is available in the Kottayam Medical College. The best oriented team is the ‘heart’ of this Government Hospital. Not the individuals, but the institution should stand as a strong pillar. It is essential to develop the facilities of Government hospitals to ensure the best treatment to the common man. Doctor says from the bottom of his heart.
Dr. T K Jayakumar hails from Kidangoor. His wife Dr. Lakshmi is also working in Kottayam Medical College.
