Kochi | Over 40 passengers had a narrow escape as the ‘junkar’ carrying them drifted into the sea after its engine stopped at Fort Kochi in the morning here today.
The incident took place at 0630 hrs when the ‘junkar,’ carrying 40 passengers and large number of vehicles proceeding to Vypeen from Fort Kochi, lost control and started to move to the sea aimlessly after its engine stopped as its propellers got struck in weeds.
As the engine stopped and moved aimlessly to the sea, the people panicked. However, the Marine Wing succeeded in stopping the junkar and tried to tow it to the jetty but failed because of over weight and bad weather condition following heavy rain.
But, few fishing boats and port trust tugs came to the spot and towed it successfully to the nearest jetty, providing great relief to the passengers. As many as 11 people had lost their lives when a fishing boat hit a ferry at Fort Kochi in the first week of September.
