New Delhi | India today strongly reacted to the incident in which an Indian worker’s hand was chopped off by her Saudi employer, describing it as ”unacceptable”, and asked the authorities in the Gulf country to take strict action in the matter.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj expressed her outrage over the treatment meted out to the woman, Ms Kasthuri Munirathinam. The incident is brutal and deeply disturbing, she said.
Kasturi, who hails from Tamil Nadu, was hospitalised in Riyadh in a critical condition after her right hand was chopped off by her employer.
External Affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup, in a statement said, Our Mission in Riyadh has apprised us about the treatment meted out to Ms Kasthuri Munirathinam by her employer in Saudi Arabia. Our Mission officials have visited Ms Munirathinam in the hospital. Her situation is currently stable.
She had gone to Saudi Arabia about two months ago. In August, Ms Munirathinam was first taken to Damam and later shifted to a house in Riyadh, where only women stayed.
According to Mr Swarup, Riyad Police chief has assured Indian Mission official of a speedy and fair investigation.
Our Mission in Riyadh is actively pursuing the matter with the Saudi authorities. We had raised the issue on 7th of October itself with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and asked for strict action in the matter and severe punishment for the sponsor, he said.
Separately Mission officials have met the Chief as well as the Investigating Officer of the Police Station and have requested that Ms Munirathinam’s statement be recorded without further delay, an independent probe be undertaken on the incident and a case of attempted murder lodged against the sponsor. The sponsor should be also directed to pay for her on-going treatment, he added.
He said the Ministry in Delhi, and the Mission in Riyadh were monitoring the status of Ms Munirathinam closely and are in touch with her family to extend all necessary support to overcome this difficult phase.
At the same time, we continue to pursue the matter at all levels with Saudi officials to ensure speedy justice for her, said the spokesperson.
