Patna | An estimated over 10 per cent electorate exercised their franchise in 57 constituencies spread over nine districts in the fifth and final phase of Bihar Assembly polls till 0900 hrs amid elaborate security arrangements today.
Districts where polling is in progress are Madhubani, Supaul, Darbhanga, Araria, Kishanganj, Purnea, Katihar, Madhepura and Saharsa. Reports of EVMs developing snags were also received from some booths where polling was disrupted for some time.
However, polling resumed soon after EVMs were replaced.There was no report of any untoward incident so far. Long queues of voters, particularly women, were seen at all the polling booths. Additional Chief Electoral Officer R Laxmanan said elaborate security arrangements had been made to ensure free and fair polling.
Voting percentage continued to increase with each phase of election and it was expected that the trend could continue even in final phase of voting as well, he noted. Strict instructions have been given to all police superintendents and other officers concerned to deal firmly with those trying to disturb the polling process, Mr Laxmanan said.
State Director General of Police P K Thakur said three drones and two choppers have been pressed into service to maintain air surveillance in Naxalite-dominated districts where polling is in progress. Patrolling in Kosi, Kamla Balan and Bhutahi Balan was also conducted by motor boats to check the movement of trouble makers, he said.
