Kozhikode | Police have arrested three officials of a contracting agency in connection with the death of three people in an underground sewage canal in Kozhikode Thursday.
Two casual laborers — Bhaskar and Narasimha – and an autorickshaw driver — Noushad — died by inhaling poisonous gas after entering the sewage canal through a manhole.
The laborers were from Andhra Pradesh. Noushad is a Kozhikode native.
The workers were deputed by Chennai- based Sewage Company, Shriram EPC Private Limited.
The Kasaba police arrested the company’s project manager Selvakumar, site engineer Raghu Reddy and safety officer Alok Antony on Friday. A case of homicide without an intention to kill has been registered against them.
The laborers, who entered the underground canal beneath a road through a manhole, died due to suffocation as it was devoid of oxygen.
Noushad, who stopped his autorickshaw after seeing passers-by gathering at the scene, died while trying to rescue the laborers.
A two-year contract for clearing the 33-km drainage was awarded to Shriram EPC Private Limited by the Kozhikode Corporation in October, 2011. City Mayor V.K.C. Mammad Koya alleged that the company had given a sub-contract to the laborers without any safety measures which caused the mishap.
