Thiruvananthapuram | Congress leader and Nedumangad MLA, Palod Ravi has been elected as the new Deputy Speaker of the Kerala State Legislative Assembly.
He succeeds N. Shakthan, who was promoted as Speaker in the wake of incumbent G Karthikeyan’s death in March.
In the polling held Wednesday morning, 74 members voted in favor of Ravi, while the Opposition candidate E. Chandrashekharan of CPI won 65 votes. Thomas Isaac MLA did not vote as he is abroad to attend Paris international climate conference.
Ravi, 66, is a Member of executive committees of AICC and KPCC, All India Secretary of Indian National Trade Union Congress, Chairman of ‘Samskara Sahithi’ – the arts and cultural forum of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, and Office bearer of many trade unions.
S. Jayakumari is his wife. They have two children.
Ravi is currently serving his third term in the Kerala State Assembly.
