Kumali | One of the three shutters of the Mullapperiyar dam’s spillway, which were opened on Tuesday, has been closed after water flow from the catchment area to the dam slowed.
Currently, 240.5 cubic ft. of water is flowing to the dam per second.
The water-level of Mullapperiyar dam has gone up to 141. 67 meter.
The Tamilnadu government lifted the shutter Wednesday in contrast to an assurance given a day before that water-level at Mullapperiyar dam will be lowered to 140 meters.
Water seeped into six houses in the perimeter of the dam after the shutters were lifted on Monday. The action by Tamilnadu government authorities at short notice evoked protest by the local people, who are concerned over the risk of living in the face of inundation.
After the Kerala government brought this to the attention of the Tamilnadu government, the district collectors of Idukki and Theni had reached an understanding that a 12-hours notice will be served before a shutter is lifted.
