Thiruvananthapuram | RSS pracharak and Hindu Aikyavedi leader Kummanam Rajasekharan is the new president of the BJP Kerala unit. The final decision came after two days hectic deliberations in Delhi involving BJP national president Amit Shah and various leaders from the state. The announcement came today and Kummanam reached back to the state capital and is expected to assume office soon. He received a rousing welcome at the airport.
Other name cropped up for the post was of Balashankar, former editor of RSS mouthpiece The Organizer and convener of the BJP intellectuals cell. The present leadership in Kerala was in favour of Kummanam and the incumbent president V Muraleedharan put forth the name. Being relatively unknown in the political scene in Kerala for several years became apparently a disqualifying factor for Balashankar.
Kummanam is the state general secretary of the Hindu Aikyavedi and is a prominent Hindu leader who tirelessly worked in bringing up RSS in Kerala. He played the most important and pivotal role in the historical ‘movement against Nilakkal temple land encroachment’ and ‘Paliyam Declaration’ pronounced by prominent Hindu religious scholars.
He was born in a village Kummanam in Kottayam and studied at CMS college. Started his career as a journalist in Deepika daily in 1974. In 1987, he resigned from his government job in FCI and became a full-time pracharak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
He was instrumental in bringing together several spiritual organisations and encouraging them to work for the improvement of the Hindus. He held the responsibilities of Hindu Aikya Vedi organisation secretary, Sabarimala Ayyappa Sewa Samajam general secretary and Janmabhumi daily chairman.
He stays single and leads a life away from his immediate family. In 2012, he took another monumental struggle on his shoulder, Agitation against KGS Aranmula International Airport. Through this he became the face of ‘Green Fight’ in BJP. Now he is the Chief Patron of Aranmula Heritage Village Action Council, which protests against the said Airport.
