‘Spotlight’ wins top prize at National Society of Film

Los Angeles | Investigative journalism drama Spotlight has scored another top prize after it was named the best picture of 2015 by officials at the US National Society Of Film Critics.

The acclaimed film, starring Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo, was also awarded the best screenplay honour for writers Josh Singer and Tom McCarthy.

The movie was previously awarded best picture by critics in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston, among others, and is considered a top contender at this year’s Academy Awards.

Creed star Michael B Jordan was named best actor and British star Charlotte Rampling was honoured as best actress for her role in 45 Years, while supporting actor awards went to Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) and Kristen Stewart (Clouds of Sils Maria).

Lesbian drama Carol scored best cinematography and best director (Todd Haynes), while Amy Winehouse documentary Amy was named the best non-fiction film at the organisation’s 50th annual awards, which took place in New York.
