Chennai | In a mark of honour, the birth anniversary of 17th Century Madurai ruler Thirumalai Naicker will be celebrated as a government function, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced here today.
A legendary king in the history of Tamil Nadu, Thirumalai Naicker (Circa 1584-1659) was known for his courage and grit and he was the most reputed of all the Madurai Nayak rulers, Jayalalithaa said.
Credited for several achievements including building many temples and his palace Tirumalai Nayak Mahal, in Madurai representations were received from general public to celebrate his birth anniversary as a State function, she said in an official release.
I am very happy to announce that his birth anniversary on the Thai Poosam day (Tamil month Thai, Poosam star) will be celebrated in Madurai as a government function, she said.
This year, Naicker’s birth anniversary falls on January 24 and the Chief Minister said she has ordered officials to celebrate it as State function.
