Thiruvananthapuram | Former Indian diplomat and the Vice-Chairman of the Kerala State Higher Education Council, T.P. Sreenivasan was manhandled by SFI activists here Friday morning.
SFI cadres were protesting outside the venue of the global education meet being held at Leela Hotel in Kovalam, when Sreenivasan arrived there to receive the guests.
The former Indian Ambassador fell down in the unexpected attack. A few policemen who were present at the scene did not try to save him from the attackers, he told media.
SFI had threatened to disrupt the meet alleging that the government organized the event with the aim of further commercializing the higher education sector and allowing entry for foreign universities and monopolies.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who was supposed to attend the meet, did not turn up as he has cancelled all his public functions Friday due to state-wide protests against him.
Later, Srinivasan inaugurated the meet.
CPM District unit Secretary Kadakampilly Surendran apologized over the untoward incident.
Thiruvananthapuram range IG has instructed City Police Commissioner to probe the incident.
