Thiruvananthapuram | Renowned Malayalam poet and lyricist O. N. V. Kurup died at KIMS, hospital here in Thiruvananthapuram.
He was 84 years old. O.N.V Kurup was born to O. N. Krishna Kurup and K. Lakshmikutty Amma, on 27 May 1931 at Chavara, Kollam in Kerala. His literary contributions to the malayalam literature is eternal.
He received the awards Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan . O.N.V was also a malyalam professor in various government colleges in Kerala including University college, Thiruvananthapuram and Maharaja’s college, Ernakulam.
He is the fifth Jnanpith laureate from Kerala and the second Malayalam poet to win the prestigious award. He is one of the leading lyricists in Malayalam film, drama and album industry. He was honoured by the best lyricist Kerala state award thirteen times and also honoured by the best lyricist National award for the malyalam movie ‘Vyshali’.
To Mr. O.N.V.Kurup, a poem ultimately becomes a passionate wish for a common cause, or a means to unite hearts with showers of love and compassion. His poems can be an outpour of feelings, weighed down by loss and helplessness.
He had written several poems like Marubhumi, Nilakkannukal, Mayilppili, Oru Tulli Velicham, Agni Salabhangal, Aksharam, Karutta pakshiyude pattu, Uppu, Bhumikku Oru Charamagitam, Sarngakappakshikal, Mrgaya, Tonniaksharangal, Aparahnam and Ujjayini. He has also written a collection of poems for children, called Valapottukal. His contributions as a lyricist to the Malayalam film industry is priceless.
Each of his song is a passion and of course an emotion to every malayali. Mr. O.N.V.Kurup’s contribution in the literary domain of Kerala is widely appreciated for his excellence in poetry.He is survived by his wife Sarojini ,one son and one daughter.
