Kannur: Kannur airport on Monday witnessed the first test-landing of a plane.
A Dornier 228 aircraft of Indian Air Force from Bengaluru, which can carry 10 passengers, landed on the runway at 9.06am, passing a milestone in the development of northern Malabar.
The airport, which is Kerala’s fourth for passengers, is expected to become fully operational in December.
The construction of 2400 meters of the 3050-meter-long runway has been completed. The runway would be extended later to 4,000 metres, so that larger passenger planes can operate here.
At a function held after the landing, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy inaugurated the airport. Air Marshall R. Nambiar, who was the pilot of the test flight, was honored.
The Kannur International Airport(KIAL) is the second greenfield airport setup in the public private partnership (PPP) model in civil aviation infrastructure sector in Kerala .
