Thrissur: In a surprising move, KPAC Lalitha has decided not to contest as the CPM candidate in Vadakkanchery Assembly constituency.
The veteran film actress told media that she informed her decision to CPM Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, citing health reasons and busy film shooting schedule.
Her decision comes a day after CPM State Secretariat meeting approved her candidature in Vadakkancherry.
Last week, posters had appeared in many parts of Vadakkanchery in the name of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) expressing protest in naming Lalitha as candidate.
It rejects candidates directly fielded from top. What we need is not film stars but sons of the soil, the posters read. But Lalitha denied the allegation.
Lalitha, who is a supporter of the Communist party from the days of her association with the revolutionary drama troop KPAC, had reacted positively to her candidature.
And on Monday, Lalitha made it clear that she is not withdrawing in the wake of public protests.
KPAC Lalitha’s name had appeared in the draft list of probable candidates for the upcoming Assembly polls, approved by CPM state committee. The party’s district committee recommended her name as pro-CPM independent candidate from Vadakkanchery. Minister and Congress leader C.N. Balakrishnan is the sitting MLA there.
