Magazine row: Police to register cases against students union

Kozhikode | Police today said it will register cases against the students union of a private college here for allegedly publishing articles defaming national leaders and questioning the judiciary for the execution of Afzal Guru, convict in the parliament attack case, in its magazine.

We have received legal opinion from the Deputy Director of Prosecution (on proceeding with sedition charges). We havedecided to slap cases under IPC sections 292 (sale of obscene books, etc) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief), Circle Inspector of Kasaba police station, P Promod, said.

We are also exploring the possibility of registering casesunder CrPC act, he added.

A group of students from Zamorin’s Guruvayoorappan college,owing allegiance to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, had on Friday last, burnt copies of the magazine– Viswavikhyathamaya Theri (World-renowned Swearword)– alleging that the articles in it were against the tradition of the country and hurt the sentiments of the country.

They had filed a complaint with police on Monday, alleging that the magazine of the students’ union, owing allegiance to the Students Federation of India, contained articles defaming Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while questioning the judiciary for its order to execute Afzal Guru.
