Thiruvananthapuram | In one of the best performances in the history of Kerala Assembly elections, CPI-M led Left Democratic Front (LDF) is returning to power with a thumping majority. 91 of its candidates have won are in the lead in the 140-member House. Congress-led UDF candidates have won 47 seats, while NDA opened its account in the Kerala Assembly for the first time.
Former Government chief whip, P C George, who was not part of both the fronts, won in Poonjar by 27821 votes.
BJP-NDA, which had fielded candidates in all constituencies, came second in six seats. O Rajagopal (Nemom) won with a lead of over 8000 votes, pushing back V Sivankutty, sitting MLA, to second spot.
Four ministers in the outgoing Oommen Chandy ministry — K Babu, Shibu Baby John, KP Mohanan and PK Jayalakshmi — and Speaker N. Shakthan have lost the Kerala Assembly election.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the loss was unexpected.
CPI (M) polit bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan has won by 36,905 votes over his rival Dharmadam, while Marxist veteran V S Achutanandan has won by 27,142 votes over his nearest rival over C Krishnakumar of NDA in Malampuzha.
It was a sea-saw battle for former Finance Minister K M Mani, who finally won by over 4000 votes, while K Babu lost in Thripponithura. The two ministers had been under the cloud of bar bribery scam, which was a severe embarrassment for the Chandy government.
BJP state President Kummanam Rajasekharan, cricketer Sreesanth and former BJP State president V Muraleedharan have lost the election.
LDF swept Kollam district. It nearly swept Thrissur as Congress candidate Anil Akkara won by just 3 votes in Wadakkanchery.
In Manjeshwaram, K Surendran (BJP) lost by a margin of less than 100 votes.
The lone woman minister in the Oommen Chandy cabinet, P K Jayalakshmi lost by 1307 votes in Mananthavady constituency in Wayanad district.
In Thrissur district, LDF won in all the 13 constituencies including in that city, where KPCC General secretary Padmaja Venugopal, daughter of late Congress leader K Karunakaran, has lost.
Actors Ganesh Kumar and Mukesh both fielded by LDF, are ahead of their rivals in their respective constituencies.
UDF has upper hand only in Malappuram, Ernakulam, and Kottayam districts.
LDF candidate Kadakampally Surendran won Kazhakoottam constituency in Thiruvananthapuram district by a margin of 7347 votes against his nearest rival V Muraleedharan of BJP.
V Joy of CPI(M) won by 2,386 votes against sitting MLA Varkala Kahar of Congress in Varkala.
Sitting MLA G S Jayalal (CPI-LDF) won by 34,407 votes against his BJP rival B B Gopakumar at Chattanoor.
V Satyan of CPI(M) won by a margin of 40,383 votes against nearest rival K Chandra Babu (RSP-UDF) in Attingal constituency.
Sitting MLA V Sasi (CPI-LDF) won by a marign of 14,322 votes against his rival K S Ajit kumar of Congreses in Chirayinkeezhu consitutency in Thiruvananthapuram district.
In Neyyatinkara, CPI(M)’s S K Ansalan won the seat from Congress sitting MLA R Selvaraj by 9,543 votes.
Actor K B Ganesh Kumar (Kerala congress(b)-LDF) defeated actor P V Jagadeesh Kumar of Congress by a margin of 24,562 votes in Pathanapuram constituency in Kollam district.
In Payyannur, C Krishnan of CPI(M) won by 40,263 votes against his rival Sajith Mavvan of Congress by 40,623 votes.
In Mattannur, E P Jayarajan of CPI(M) won by a margin of 43,381 votes against A P Prashanth of (JDU-UDF).
M Naushad (CPI(M) won by margin of 28,803 votes from Eravipuram in Kollam district against sitting RSP-UDF MLA A A Azeez.
In Kayamkulam, U Pratibha Hari of CPI(M) won by a margin of 11,857 vtoes against M Liju of Congress.
Sitting MLA K S Sabarinathan of Congress won by 21,314 votes against A A Rasheed of CPI(M) in Aruvikkara constituency.
K Kunhiraman of CPI(M) won by a margin of 3,832 votes against K Sudhakaran of Congress from Udma in Kasargod district.
P T Thomas of Congress won by a margin of 11,996 votes defeating Sebastian Paul (LDF-ind) in Thrikakara constituency.
Roji M John of Congress defeated Benny Moonjely (JDS-LDF) by 9,186 votes in Angamally constituency.
N A Nellikkunnu (IUML-udf) defeated Ravisha Thantri Kuntar (BJP-NDA) by 8,607 votes in Kasaragod.
Kovur Kunjumon (RSP(L)-LDF) won by a margin of 20,529 votes against his rival Ullas Kovoor (RSP-UDF) from Kunnathur constituency.
Health Minister V S Sivakumar (Congress) won by 10,905 votes from Thiruvananthapuram central constituency defeating nearest rival Antony Raju (LDF).
Food Minister Anoop Jacob (Kerala Congress (Jacob)-UDF) won by a margin of 6195 votes against M J Jacob (CPI-M-LDF) in Piravom constituency.
Culture and NORKA Minister K C Joseph (CONG-UDF) defeated K T Jose (CPI-LDF) in Irikkur constituency by a margin of 9647 votes.
