Thiruvananthapuram | Arya Premji (99), the wife of late social reformer and noted stage-film actor Bharath M. P. Bhatathirippad, or Premji, has died.
The historical figure died here Monday morning following old age-related ailments.
She is known for marrying Premji at the age of 27, 12 years after she became a widow at her teens.
A highlight in his fight against conservatism that existed in the Nambudiri community, Premji got married at the age of 40 to Arya Antharjanam. This was a revolutionary action at a time marrying widow was against the tradition of Nambudiri community.
A member of Karuvat Illam in Kanjany, Trichur, Arya was first forced to marry at the age of 14, without having received school education. Her husband died a year later, and Arya became a widow.
Arya was ostracized for marrying Premji.
The documentary film ‘Amma’, produced by Arya’s son and prominent media personality Neelan based on her life, won national award this year.
