Kochi | Police have arrested a man suspected to be the murderer of Dalit law student Jisha.
Assam native Amiur Islam, who was taken to police custody from Thrissur-Palakkad border two days ago, is said to have admitted during interrogation that he committed the crime.
The blood-stained black rubber sandals, believed to be worn by the murderer, are matching the foot of the man in custody. The blood stain also matched with Islam’s blood sample that was confirmed in DNA test.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan confirmed the arrest, and termed it as a golden feather in the cap of the police force.
It was the statement by the shop owner who sold the footwear to the Assam native that turned crucial in his arrest.
The man in custody had worked in the construction of Jisha’s house, which is under construction.
He is said to have come to Jisha’s house at 4 pm on the day of the murder in a drunken state, reports quoting police said.
Amiur Islam reportedly arrived at Jisha’s house on April 28 morning, and tried to have sexual intercourse with Jisha, but the latter successfully resisted his attempt. Islam, who came back excessively drunken in the evening, is said to have raped Jisha after murdering her.
Police have also arrested some of his friends, and indicate that the crime was not carried out single-handedly.
