Media misinterpreted my statement; I’m with the government on medical college issue: VS

Thiruvananthapuram | In an apparent damage control move, hours after criticising party-led LDF government on the UDF’s stir over private medical college issue, senior CPI-M leader V S Achuthanandan today said media has misinterpreted his statement.

“The attempt was to create a false impression that myself and the government are on two different sides. The aim was to defame me and the government,” he said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, Achuthanandan had criticised the CPI(M)-led LDF government’s approach to the opposition UDF’s stir on self-financing medical college fees and admission issue, saying it is “not right”.

Achuthanandan, also the Chairman of the Administrative Reforms Commission, who had two days ago met the agitating UDF MLAs, said “the strike should be resolved at the earliest. The government should take steps to find a solution to end the stir”.

Clarifying his stand, the nonagenarian leader said that when he was coming out after inaugurating a protest meeting against the proposed merger of State Bank of Travancore with SBI the media had approached him.

Achuthanandan said what he said was the agitation (against SBT merger) was justifiable and should be settled. “This is what I meant. My statement had been misinterpreted as that of a reaction toward the agitation by the UDF on the issue.” After his statement, a debate was going on. “Effort was to create an impression that myself and government are on two different side,” he said.

Congress-led UDF is on a warpath on the fee structure of self-financing medical colleges with three of its MLAs on an indefinite fast at the Assembly foyer since September 28 demanding a rollback.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan declined to comment on Achuthanandan’s earlier remarks.

Senior CPI(M) leader and state Industries Minister E P Jayarajan, however, rejected Achuthanandan’s criticism, saying no individual or political leader who understands things in its proper perspective could say that the government’s approach to the protest was wrong.
