Opener Murali Vijay was caught by Tom Latham off Jeetan Patel for 10 runs in the fifth over with Indian score board at 26.
Veteran opener Gautam Gambhir, who made a comeback into the Indian playing XI after more than two years, steadied the innings in the company of Cheteshwar Pujara. The second wicket partnership has so far added 24 runs and took the Indian score past 50.
Pacer Umesh Yadav was also included in the side due to an injury to Bhuvaneshwar Kumar.
For New Zealand, regular skipper Kane Williamson is back in the side while all-rounder Jimmy Neesham made it to the XI in place of pacer Neil Wagner.
