Pune | Opting to bat, Australia were 84 for the loss of one wicket at lunch on the opening day of the first cricket test against India, here today.

Openers David Warner and Matt Renshaw put on 82 runs when the former was bowled by Umesh Yadav for 38. And Renshaw retired hurt in the very next ball for 36 runs.

Earlier, Australia skipper Steven Smith won the toss and elected to bat at MCA stadium.

India have preferred spinner Jayant Yadav over paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar along with main spinners R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, but it was pacer Umesh Yadav who got the badly needed breakthrough.

Australia have fielded two specialist spinners in Nathon Lyon and left-armer Steve O’Keefe.

Brief Scores:

Australia 1st innings: 84 for one in 33 overs (David Warner 38, Matt Renshaw 36 retired hurt; Umesh Yadav 1/1).
