New Delhi | Strongly confronting the Supreme Court move in initiating a contempt case against him Calcutta High Court judge C S Karanan today appeared before the SC bench and sought restoration of his administrative and judicial work.
The upper court however refused to entertain his plea and granted Justice Karnan 4 weeks’ time for compliance through responding to the court in proper manner on the contempt notice issued against him.
Justice Karnan opposed non-restoration of his judicial powers and said he will not appear in SC on next date of hearing. “I am also holding constitutional post. My dignity has been hurt and work has been taken away without hearing me” Justice Karnan told the SC bench.
A 7-judge bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar suggested Justice Karnan to file a medical record if he thinks he is “not mentally fit” to respond. “I don’t need to show any medical certificate” Justice Karnan replied to this.
The ground for the contempt case was originated when Justice Karnan vaguely alleged while delivering one of his judgements that some upper court judges were currupt and communal during their judicial practice, which the higher court viwed as degradable to the judicial prowess.
