Violence escalates in Kozhikode; BJP calls for hartal on Saturday

Kozhikode (Kerala) | CPI(M) Kozhikode district secretary P. Mohanan had a narrow escape when a country bomb hurled at him exploded at the premises of the district committee office of the party in the wee hours today. Mohanan was arriving to the office when the attackers charged him.
Protests against the incident turned violent elsewhere and BMS district committee office was attacked today. BMS, the trade union arn of BJP, called for a dawn to dusk hartal in the district on Saturday. BJP and Sangh organisations announced their support to the hartal call.
Condemning the attack on Mohanan a district wide dawn to dusk hartal is in progress and shops and establishments remain closed. Though vehicle transport has been exempted from the hartal’s ambit buses keep off the road. Two wheelers, three wheelers and private cars were seen plying in the morning.
Party workers are conducting protest marches all over the district and police confirmed stray incidents of violence. Stone pelting at BMS district committee office in the city and an assault on one media camera person were occurred.
Mohanan, who escaped unhurt in the incident, said that atleast four persons were involved. Hard pieces from the bomb hit his scooter, office notice board and other items on the veranda. The attack occurred around 1 AM when Mohanan was reaching back to his office from a travel.
CPI(M) alleged RSS-BJP hands behind the attack on Mohanan. The district is tenseful these days following several incidents of attacks on both the political outfits offices.
Police said some unidentified persons hurled two bombs at the CPI-M district office.
They said no one was injured in the incident which left window panes in the front portion of the building damaged.
One of bombs exploded while another was recovered from the compound of the office and defused, police said.
A group of persons came and threw the bombs at the office at about 1.30 am, they added.
The incident came two days after bombs were hurled at the BJP district office in Thiruvananthapuram.
BJP had alleged that CPI-M workers were behind the June 7 incident when two unidentified persons threw a ‘petrol’ bomb.
The attack on BJP office came in the backdrop of the attempt to manhandle CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury in New Delhi by two members of a fringe Hindu outfit.
